John Brogden on Leading Change in the Legal Profession

The Tristan Jepson Memorial Foundation welcomes Mr John Brogden for a discussion about leading change in the legal profession towards improved psychological health and wellbeing.

JohnBrogdenJohn Brogden is the Chairman of Lifeline Australia, which provides an Australia-wide, 24 hour crisis support service (13 11 14) for access to crisis support, suicide prevention and mental health support services.  John is also the CEO of the Financial Services Council, which represents Australia’s retail and wholesale funds management businesses, superannuation funds, life insurers, financial advisory networks, trustee companies and public trustees.  He was a Member of NSW Parliament from 1996 to 2005 and elected Leader of the NSW Opposition in 2002, making him the youngest person ever to hold the role.

Following the Lecture, Professor Jill McKeough, Chair of the Foundation’s Best Practice Guidelines Subcommittee, will present on the progress of the TJMF Psychological Wellbeing: Best Practice Guidelines.

Chairman, Lifeline Australia & CEO, Financial Services Council

John is the Chairman of Lifeline Australia, which provides an Australia-wide, 24 hour crisis support service (13 11 14) for access to crisis support, suicide prevention and mental health support services. He has walked a very public journey of success, failure and redemption.

From 1996 to 2005 John was the Member for Pittwater in the NSW Parliament. In 2002, on his 33rd birthday, John was elected Leader of the Opposition – the youngest person ever to hold the role and lead a major political party in Australia.

From the highs of political leadership, through the lows of a suicide attempt and depression and into the business world, John has experienced the highs, lows and highs of life.

John is a passionate speaker and an outstanding advocate for mental illness. He shares his experiences of depression and suicide with honesty and bravery and challenges the common misunderstandings of living with a mental illness.

John is the CEO of the Financial Services Council, representing Australia’s retail and wholesale funds management businesses, superannuation funds, life insurers, financial advisory networks, trustee companies and public trustees.

John is the Chairman of UrbanGrowth NSW, Chairman of Lifeline Australia, a Director of NIA Limited (health.com.au) and Chairman of Furlough House Retirement Village. John is also the Patron of Sailability Pittwater, Bilgola Surf Lifesaving Club, Avalon Beach Surf Lifesaving Club. He holds a Master of Public Affairs from the University of Sydney.
